I appreciate the reply.

The problem seem to be that the machine clamps on the Aria are so thick that it is not possible to have adjacent clamps, i.e., two strings woven and clamped on the right side and only one on the left.

I clamped the second main on the right side with a second starting clamp (outside the frame).  From that point it was easy to finish the mains.  Not sure this is good stringing technique.

I think I will send David Pavlich an email and ask him to try this on his Aria.  Could be I still don't understand.

Thanks

Ed

Still no problem--just weave 3 strings on one side and then jump over to the other. It will still work that way right?

Maybe not Ed--as I thought about this you're still going to have to have that clamp on the second string at the throat opposite your other clamp  Sad

It took me awhile longer than I thought it would (busy and all), but as luck would have it (?), we got about a week of rain down here, courtesy of Noel, and I got to wrap up my efforts to try JayCee's pattern.
I strung the same racquet (Wilson HTour 95) with the same string (Gosen Micro 16:  I know JayCee asked me to use a decent poly, since that's what he used to develop the style, but I wasn't going to blow a bundle on this unless I saw some benefit).  I used the same tension (55#) and the same machine (Star 5).  I used a double-half hitch on all finishing knots, plus my normal starting knot.  I tried each style 3 times, and let the frame sit for 3 days before starting over.
My results were not the same that JayCee experienced.  String bed stiffness with the ert700 was within the +/- 1 point variance of the machine on all frames (low of 40, high of 42), but the tie-off strings were all noticeably looser no matter what pattern I used (standard or JayCee).  As one earlier poster surmised, the tie-off was still looser, but was in a different place.  This was the case whether I tested mains or crosses.
I would like some advice from JayCee on what  I might do differently if I decide to do the test again.  I actually liked being able to clamp off so close to the frame on the "last" main when I tried his technique. Wink

I know I shouldn't sound like an advertisement on my first post, but I just wanted to drop a line that after stringing with SW floating clamps for about 2 months (double/triple), I honestly don't see myself going back to fixed clamps for personal stringing and when I string for others at tournaments.  Very easy to transport a lighter dropweight (no turntable) with a pair of clamps in a carrying case.  JayCee's method of stringing mains for tension stability didn't really ring with me the couple of times I tried it, but I do like his method for tying off mains and crosses.  I haven't had a chance to do an ERT measure of my stringjobs yet, but I've been pleased with the results  Smiley.

Just like t29, after having worked for several months with the fixed clamps of my Bab. Sensor I work now since more than two years with my pair of SW floating clamps, and I must confess that I would never come back on any fixed clamps : the job is fast, secure, precise and pleasant.

Hi, I have used flying clamps for many years, but for specific purposes and not as a generalist tool. I have found that they do not suit natural gut as that slight twist can crimp the gut so easily and if there is to be any slippage with flying clamps, natural gut will slip first! An expensive error. Also, as you are not able to ease off the base clamp to guard aginst slippage, particularly when starting the mains, they remain for a handy accessory and not the first choice.
How much gut work do you get through? Thanks, Liam

Hi Liam,
" I have used flying clamps for many years . . ."
but are they Stringway flying clamps ?
I guess not, otherwise the rest of your post would not make sense because a Stringway flying clamp does not slip and does not damage gut strings. Wink

For all the other flying clamps on the market you are probably right, I have never used a flying clamp that is comparable with the Stringway and the SW Triple Flying Clamp is unique, negligable twist and no draw-back on the last main before the tie-off.  Smiley

I have used gut strings for many years . . .
but I don't string gut very often these days, today I think that it's better to compare the need for careful stringing with some of the more fragile monofilament strings like SP PP or PMF which really don't appréciate being marked by clamps or poorly conceived (or poorly maintained) machines and tools. The slightest indentation can result in strings that break apparently without reason, just like gut. Sad

When are you going to get some SW flying clamps ?
Thanks, John.

Thanks John, I will see if I have enough pennies in the piggybank. I will certainly look the clamps up and gather some information, we have some Stringway contacts over here in the UK.
I have some badminton stringers who ONLY use flying clamps and they really do move those around the stringbed very quickly, so it shows that all tools can be very effective in the hands of those who prefer to use them. Regards, Liam

I haven't tried gut with the SW clamps yet (simply because no one I string for has the money or motivation to try it).  These do a fine job on just about any other string though.  I've worked through a good selection of syn gut, multi, monofilaments/co-polys without any issues with slipping or noticeable tension loss during stringing.  The triple clamp especially is nice for doing mains (had an idea the other day to maybe try starting the mains first with a double clamp then use 2 triple clamps to finish the rest of the mains ... but there's probably no need for it).  Cleaning is also pretty easy with these compared to removing the fixed clamps and having to lubricate the entire machine (some rubbing alcohol for the teeth and compressed air to blow out any dust in the hinges).

I'll certainly post back though whenever I get a chance to work with natural gut.
