What staple gun do you recommend?
Oct 20th, 2008, 5:19am

Hi folks,

I realized that after going to the GSS symposium '08, the staple guns used there were mainly the one with very short crown width.

Looks like Hansen's model T-2 with a 1/8" crown width used to be the recommended stapler in general(USRSA, ATS sports, etc) but Hansen Tracker just discontinued that model.

The next smallest staples I found so far are 3/16" crown head but I don't want to spend $150+ for an electric stapler just to use these. If a 1/4" crown head size isn't an issue, I can get away with Arrows T2025.

-Which Stapler(specific model) do you recommend?
-Do you think the crown width matters? 1/8", 3"16", 1/4", etc..
-Do you recommend me getting an electric one by biting the bullet since I might have to staple a graphite pallet one of these days?
-Arrow T18 is recommended by USRSA but it has a somewhat of a round crown. Has anyone used this and can share some experience?

Also, in the USRSA Stringer's Digest, if I remember it correctly, it said to staple perpendicular but I'm curious how many people at the pro shop actually does it this way and whether it's really super important to do so.

Thanks,
Kaz

I seem to recall that way, way back the USRSA recommended a hand held Duo-Fast stapler first and the Hansen as a cheaper alternative second. I always regretted not getting that Duo-Fast stapler. I worked a while for a store that had the Duo-Fast and it was way better than the Hansen. By the time I was ready to splurge for the Duo-Fast it was discontinued.

Just about the only thing the Hansen is good for is starting grips. Occasionally I will use it way up high on a butt cap (where it's thinnest) if the underlying handle is foam and I think 8 little staples can save me the trouble of a more time consuming handle repair. But it is a pretty weak stapler and my advice is "buy it right the first time".

I use a Sears rechargeable and the divergent point staples that Albert Lee brought to our attention here. Searching the message boards for the keyword "Staple" I came up with a couple posts that are relevant and I am including the links below. Please check them out. One is Tim's personal choice.

Hi Rufus. Thanks for the reply. I noticed that when I do a search with the word "staple" I didn't get a single search result back. When I do a search for "Star" as in star5, I got results back so I'm not sure what's going on here with the search but thanks for copying pasting the link to the useful thread.

If you are referring to the Craftsman electric stapler
model#836.272310  then I would suggest the 1/2 inch x 3/16 part #27212 from Craftsman (Sears) It is the best all around size.

I actually have Craftsman 9-27235 stapler.

I couldn't find these at Sears.com although I just searched briefly.
Perhaps these models already phased out.
I'll look more tomorrow.

Thanks,
Kaz

Kaz...I think you might be right about the Sears Cordless. I couldn't find it either. But it looks like this:http://tinyurl.com/6q6v26

Regarding the "search feature" here on GSS...I clicked on the Search tab (located between the Help and Members tabs at the top of the pane) entered the word "staple" where it says "Search for..." and in the text box labeled "This post was made in the last.." I changed the default value from (one week) to (all posts). I left the number of results at 15 and that's what I got.

Thanks Rufus.

Regarding the search feature, I simply typed the keyword in the blank box to the right of Logout and missed that there was a search tab. Yes, after setting the search date range to 'year'  and doing some search I was able to get my hands on the valuable resources/information/threads!

Arigatou! (Thanks!)

The Search Feature on GSS, is not the easiest to use, and the using the search field in the upper right hand corner to the left of the Magnifying Glass is nearly worthless.
It searches only back one week, and only in the Subject Field. Really not worth much if you are looking for historical posts.  Shocked

Ahh, one just needs to play around a bit.  Roll Eyes The search feature here defaults to search for posts made in the last week, BUT there is a drop-down menu that allows you to select posts from the past month, 3 months, year or ALL.  The larger the search parameters set, the longer the query takes, but it eventually will spit out a good list for the user to review.

Thanks for pointing that out John. The search feature in the upper right hand corner is for doing quick searches within the last 7 days if I remember correctly.

If you want to make an extensive search follow John's advice and use the search feature that appears in the menu above the display box. I used this feature and entered "staple gun" as the key word and directed the search to look for "ALL" posts. I received 15 replies dating back to April 22nd, 2006.

For the record GSS chose YaBB because it's a widely used public domain software that's free to the user. There are several add-ons that can be obtained but I haven't messed with them much because often those add-ons can cause a lot of problems  Wink

What happen to the discussion on staple guns. It seems to have turned into a discussion of search.

I am interested in the answer to the original question.

Kaz -- I enjoyed meeting you at the symposium. I use the Craftsman 27235 cordless with the 27212 staples.  Works great.  I don't think Sears sells them online anymore but I always look for them any time I go into one of their stores.  Many of them don't have them but I did see 2 or 3 of them at a nearby store last week.  They were priced at $99.  So you may want to call around to the stores near you.  If you strike out, let me know if I can help out on this end.

Hi Brian! It was nice meeting you at the symposium as well.
Thanks so much for telling me the actual model name of the staple gun as it's a lot easier to google search with that information.
